Patrick Ballantyne Interview

by Makeda Taylor on December 23, 2015

I had an opportunity to conduct a short interview with Singer-Songwriter Patrick Ballantyne. In 2015, Patrick committed himself to a hit a month project. He is fresh off the release of his newest single “25 Feet of Snow”. You can listen to it here http://store.northwoodrecords.com/track/25-feet-of-snow

What was it like committing yourself to a hit a month single project? How different was this from working on your two previous albums?
Hi Makeda! Well, the albums took concentrated chunks of time…likely a few months start to finish. This project was CONSTANT…once a song was completed, artwork was selected, the track distributed to the digital sites…I’d have to move on to the next one! It left very little time for publicity, let alone writing/ recording etc. I was lucky, though, to have a core team helping and available most of the time…Tara Dunphy, Mark Plancke, Lou Trottier and Matt Connell of Northwood Records. It could not have happened without their hands on efforts.

What did you learn from the experience? Would you do it again?
I learned that the monthly release cycle is overwhelming…and it is contrary to the natural flow of record promotion. So, for that reason, I would not recommend it. That said, I enjoyed it and it was a great challenge to come up with something worthwhile for release.

Which single garnished the most attention? Do you know why?
In Canada, My Excellent Boy seemed the most popular. Outside of Canada, oddly enough, it was “Someone You should Know” which gained traction as an old-school country track. That was a ‘live off the floor’ track recorded with the OhChays down at Sharktank Studios in my hometown of Windsor Ontario. My personal faves are “Mirror Mirror” and “Fore the Harvest Comes”, probably the least commercial of the bunch.

You say that your most recent single “25 Feet of Snow” speaks of determination of moving towards our goals, what goals do you have as an artist?
Well, chiefly, that my songs are heard. Secondly, that they sell! I’ve always considered myself a ‘wholesaler’ of songs…my main market are other performers who are looking for material, or co-writing. I find it very satisfying to work with recording artists and hear their interpretation of songs I’ve written or co-written. It is a constant source of surprise and delight!

Patrick thanks for your ambitious endeavours. I enjoyed following this journey.

Thank you Makeda…it has been a lot of fun and I truly appreciate your ongoing support
